If you are familiar with the Adizero range (which has been worn for more world record runs than any other), the rest of the Pro follows in that tradition, namely: a fine balance of low weight and decent cushioning; slim fit, high breathability and keeping any non-essential features off the shoe.
The Continental rubber outsole
One day Adidas will probably revamp the way it does its outsoles, but for the meantime they’re clearly operating on an ‘if it ain’t broke…’ rationale and who are we to argue. The Continental rubber is exceptionally grippy, the flex groove configuration does the job and, well, end of story.
The carbon fibre plate
It’s not enough now to have a shoe with a simple carbon fibre plate in it. That’s already passé. If you’re a shoe brand you need to offer something which shows that your> carbon plate is better than the rest. In this case, the plate inserted between the midsole and the sockliner has been tuned to flex at a 30˚ angle, which Adidas claims is the perfect angle to give you a decent spring in the toe off without loading stress onto the metatarsals.
What we loved most, though, was the two types of midsole foam used: the new uber-light ‘Lightstrike’ foam on the front two thirds of the shoe, and Boost foam in the heel section to give extra shock attenuation and bounce when you start to fatigue and your form goes towards the end of longer runs. A clever combo which testers really felt the benefit of.
The super-slim fit
It’s a super-slim fit (even some runners with normal width feet found these a little snug to fit into), and there’s a pleasing focus on marginal features such as lack of irritation around the heel, and a breathable upper (made from a new material Adidas is calling Celermesh) which cuts down on weight without compromising on durability.
This is not a shoe that’s even pretending to be anything other than it is: a premium, lightweight shoe for fast runners looking for an advantage on race day.
