This year, nearly half of all runners from the 2019 London Marathon shared their race on Strava - the social network for athletes. This week, Strava released their Year in Sport report, mapping the biggest trends in sport for 2019 including the secrets to motivation, the gender divide in cycle commuting, the rise of ultramarathons and tech-enabled indoor training and, for the first time, gear and tech trends from the last 12 months.
As well as the fastest growing shoes and tech for 2019, Strava tapped into their data to reveal the five most popular running shoes worn at this year’s London Marathon.
The Nike Pegasus was, perhaps unsurprisingly, top of the list, with 6% of the field choosing it as their marathon shoe. Nike are now on the 36th generation of the Pegasus, making it one of the world’s most popular mass-appeal running shoes.
In a close second was the Brooks Ghost, with 5.8% of runners choosing to wear the shoe over the 26.2 miles through the streets of London. Described as our Gear Editor as, “a premium-grade neutral-cushioned shoe that offers high responsiveness and incredible softness and comfort”, the Brooks Ghost is a great long distance shoe.
Despite the Next% being found to be the fastest shoe of the year, it was still too new to be worn by the masses at this year’s London Marathon, with 5.4% of the field opting for the Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4% instead.
In fourth place was the Brooks Adrenaline, with 4.6% of runners choosing the brand’s long-running stability shoe.
3.7% of runners taking part in this year’s London Marathon were wearing the Asics Nimbus - a longtime favourite for its soft cushioning and long-distance durability.
