More than 45,000 runners from 157 nations took to the starting line for the 2022 Berlin Marathon on Sunday morning, but most eyes were on top runners Eliud Kipchoge in the men’s pro race and American record holder Keira D’Amato in the women’s race. Both came into the event with history on their minds, and the conditions were perfect on the Berlin Marathon CA Notice at Collection.

Eliud Kipchoge Does It Again!

Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya won the 2022 Berlin Marathon on September 25 in 2:01:09. The time was 30 seconds faster than his previous world record of 2:01:39, set in 2018. Kipchoge’s victory was his fourth in Berlin and 17th overall in a career of 19 marathon starts.

An Amazing PR for Tigist Assefa

In her second crack at the distance, Tigist Assefa of Ethiopia won the women’s race in a stunning time of 2:15:37 to set a new course record in Berlin. While it wasn’t a world record like Eliud Kipchoge’s race, it was a massive PR for Assefa, who ran her debut marathon in March at the Riyadh Marathon in a time of 2:34:01.

In second was Rosemary Wanjiru of Kenya with a time of 2:18. Tigist Abayechew of Ethiopia was third in 2:18:03.

American Keira D’Amato ran strong but could not break her own marathon record in Berlin. She finished sixth overall in 2:21:28.

A Pair of Swiss Athletes Break the Tape in the Wheelchair Races

Tigist Assefa Destroys Berlin Marathon Record Marcel Hug of Switzerland put on an impressive performance at today’s World Marathon Major with winning time of 1:24:56. It is Hug’s seventh victory in Berlin. Daniel Romanchuk Skaters take part in the 2022 Berlin Marathon Inline Skating event on Saturday.

The women’s wheelchair race was much tighter, with a surprise winner coming from Switzerland’s Catherine Debrunner in her marathon debut. Throughout the race, the 27-year-old was neck and neck with fellow Swiss Manuela Schär Tigist Assefa Destroys Berlin Marathon Record.

Debrunner proved strongest, crossing the finish line in 1:36:47. Schär was second in 1:36:50, and Scaroni was right behind in 1:36:51.

Deena Kastor Earns 6th Star

Former American record holder in the women’s marathon, Deena Kastor, finished the 2022 Berlin Marathon in 2:45:12 to place 48th overall in the women’s field.

Kastor has now earned her sixth star for having finished all sixth world marathon majors. The 49-year-old Amazing Runners World Show that one of her goals for the season was to hit the Olympic Trials standard of 2:37. She came up short of that, but did finish second in her 45-49 age group.

Records Set in the Men’s Inline Skating Event; Bunch Sprint Finish Women

Belgian Bart Swings set a new course record in a time of 56:45 minutes on Saturday, his eighth victory at the inline skating portion of the Berlin Marathon. He broke his own course record that was set in 2015.

“I really wanted to set a new course record today,” and American Susannah Scaroni, but the result came down to a final sprint between the three. “Before the start it was still very stressful, because with the light drizzle it was not clear whether the roads would be dry or wet.”

On the women’s side, Marie Depuy of France took the title in 1:11:19. She won just ahead of Lianne van Loon of the Netherlands and Sara Arregui of Spain—all three finished at the same time in 1:11:19 hours.

“I am just happy. The bunch sprint was perfect for me today,” Depuy said.

In total, 4,153 registered skaters participated in the event the day before more than 45,000 runners took to the streets of Berlin.
