The Peg is a legend—it’s not just Nike fans who know what we’re referring to when you call the Pegasus by its nickname. The Pegasus 41 has responsive ReactX foam and Air Units in the heel to promote a bouncy ride. A waffle tread outsole provides traction on sharp turns and slick surfaces.

Testers liked the comfort and cushioning of the Pegasus 41 but felt it lacked pop compared to past models and other trainers.

“I usually love the Pegasus, but this version felt like a little step back. Ran with it mostly on roads and running paths, and I just noticed the shoe didn’t have the pep I usually expect from it for a daily trainer,” said our director of content operations, Brian Dalek. “Maybe it’s tough to gauge in the world of super trainers that are so light, but this one felt slightly heavy.”

The Ultraboost 5X is an “uncaged” version of the Ultraboost 5, which has a rigid lace cage over the instep. The Lightboost midsole is 10 percent lighter than Adidas’s original Boost foam. But it retains the same responsive ride and maintains its softness instead of hardening in cold weather (an issue with EVA foams).

Testers liked the plush, supportive cushioning and how the knit upper accommodates their foot. Some wanted overlays, however, for a snugger, more secure fit.

Match 2: Speed Workout Shoes

The Zoom Fly 6 is your more affordable carbon-plated trainer. It has Nike’s Flyplate sandwiched in ZoomX super foam. Testers loved how the shoe could pull double time as a trainer for fast days and as a cheaper alternative to the Alphafly and Vaporfly.

“As a shoe geared for up-tempo road training, the Zoom Fly 6 excels in the areas that it’s built for. Its strengths—including light weight, medium cushion, and rocker sole--made it great for speed work and faster runs,” said Editorial Assistant Michael McDonough.

The Supernova Rise 2 has Adidas’s responsive Dreamstrike+ foam, inspired by the Lightstrike Pro foam, found in the brand’s racing shoes. Support rods embedded into the midsole encourage a smooth ride from heel to toe.

Testers were surprised by how soft the midsole felt despite the shoe’s streamlined profile and light weight. The trainer also gets high marks from runners with a high instep or arch. I personally liken the shoe to a more cushioned racing flat when I don’t want to wear a trainer with all the bells and whistles during a workout (i.e., a plated midsole).

Winner: It’s not fair to pit a shoe like the Zoom Fly 6 against the Supernova Rise 2. On a technical level, Nike is the winner here, but you save much more when you snag Adidas’s model on Amazon.

Match 3: Trail Shoes

The Nike Zegama 2 is fantastic for technical, rolling trails; its Vibram Megagrip outsole and chevron lugs practically guarantee reliable traction no matter what comes up off-road. The midsole is Nike’s responsive ZoomX foam, which delivers plenty of pop on uneven terrain.

“Wow! I have not run in Nikes in a long time, for many years. I had no idea what to expect from the Zegama Trail shoes,” said tester Jeff Miles. “To be honest, I was a little worried that they may be too narrow for me. But I really like these running shoes. They remind me a lot of a pair of Hoka Rincon 3s, but with trail lugs. They make your feet feel quick from the first step in them, and they have a good forward lean that helps you move quickly forward and engage in a good running angle.”

The Terrex Agravic 3 feels softer underfoot and has a more secure fit. The midfoot area is slightly narrow, but this promotes a stable lockdown for maneuvering through twists and turns on the trail. Despite the narrower midfoot, the toebox has ample wiggle room. The outsole features 4mm-spaced lugs that provide grip without collecting pebbles during the run.
