Best of all, workout leggings offer versatility with comfort, performance, and design making them ideal not only for a session at the gym or hitting the road for a run, but also for grabbing coffee with friends after a cardio class.

While style is important, fitness apparel needs to do much more than just look good. It might seem like a challenge to narrow down the many options available in workout leggings, but there are certain qualities and features to consider to help you choose. For example, easy-to-access storage areas and moisture-wicking fabrics are key qualities that top the list for many. Based upon my experience and research, these are the best workout leggings you can buy now.

The Best Workout Leggings

The Expert: I’m an avid runner who has spent the better part of the past 19 years running in the mid-Atlantic, specifically the Washington, D.C. area and Annapolis, Maryland, where I live now. Cold-weather running is my favorite, so I have plenty of experience testing a variety of workout leggings to keep me warm. I also keep active with spinning and strength training, Running Shoes & Gear.

Right now, one of my go-to pairs of workout leggings is the ODODOS High Waisted Yoga Leggings. They're incredibly versatile and keep me equally comfortable for a long run, HIIT session, or strength training, but the biggest perk is the two generous hip pockets. My health and fitness writing has appeared in a range of top publications, including The Washington Post, Mashable, and Insider.

How to Choose The Best Workout Leggings

Compression: When searching for workout leggings, keep in mind the activity you’re going to wear them for and, relatedly, how much compression Best Running Rain Jackets long-distance runs might call for leggings with 20-percent elastane (also called spandex or Lycra). For a yoga class, you won’t need as much compression; leggings with 10-percent elastane will ensure a stay-put fit.

Material: Material is important for both comfort and performance. Your workout leggings should be moisture-wicking and stretchy. Regardless of the specific activity you do, these two features will keep you the most comfortable as you work up a sweat. Fabrics like nylon and polyester combine flexibility (so the leggings can move with you) and moisture-wicking (so sweat doesn’t just pool and leave you chilled).

Conditions: Whether you’re working out inside or outdoors will affect your choice because leggings come in different weights and designs. When you’re The Best Trail Running Shoes of 2025, find insulated leggings with a brushed fleece interior. For a hot, sweaty pursuit, leggings with mesh panels or mid-length styles will help keep you cooler.

Features: There are certain extras that set some workout leggings apart, such as strategically placed pockets so you can stash a key, ID card, or other small necessities (and also easily access them) or an adjustable drawstring waistband for a custom fit.

How We Evaluated These Workout Leggings

In addition to my own experience, I researched the market and examined online reviews to recommend these workout leggings for women. This article includes options that work well for a variety of workouts—running, yoga, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and weight lifting, among them—so you’ll be covered no matter what your preferred activity is.

Each recommendation includes one or more suggested activities, but all the options work well for running, too. I prioritized leggings made from stretchy, breathable materials, and while evaluating, I considered comfort, performance, value, and aesthetics. Material, Pockets, and Perks: Expert Marissa Lemar Weighs in on How to Pick Your Next Pair of Leggings

    Zing Images//Getty Images

    RW: polyester, 13% spandex?

M.L.: Workout leggings bring a number of features to your workout that make a huge difference in comfort and performance. From technical fabrics to keep you comfortable and allow for a wider range of motion to fabrics that ensure modesty as you exercise, investing in workout leggings is important.

RW: What is the most important consideration with workout leggings?

M.L.: The answer is two-fold because it depends on what you’re going to be doing and where. If you’re going for a run compared to lifting weights, your needs will differ. Similarly, whether you’re working out inside or outside will help you determine what’s best.

RW: What’s the best way to care for your workout leggings?

M.L.: Always consult the specific care instructions, but the simplest tips are to turn your leggings inside out, wash them in cold water on a delicate cycle, and let them air dry. These practices help to extend the life of your leggings because they ensure the fabrics don’t lose any of their functionality.

RW: Are workout leggings only for winter workouts?

M.L.: Not at all! While some pairs are designed for the coldest outdoor pursuits, with fleece lining and heavy materials, you can always get a terrific workout with leggings that are shorter, such as capri-length, or those that have venting. Whether on a road run in the winter or your sweatiest gym session, there’s a legging to fit your workout needs.
