Born in 1964 as tennis shoes, the Stan Smith were known as the Robert Haillet. This type of sneakers features a rubber outsole and an upper where the three stripes are replaced with perforated bands for enhanced transpiration. In 1971, following Haillet's retirement, they were named Stan Smith, as a tribute to the best tennis player of the season. The model was redesigned by adding a rubber reinforcement on the collar.
