I was born in 1950 and live in Bochum. My wife Gisela also fly fishes. I became an angler at the young age of 12. At first I fished with the usual methods (for coarse and predatory fish using natural and artificial lures). I encountered fly fishing in 1986 on the Glomma River while on a Norway vacation in a trailer. Several fly fishers were at the campground in Os. During the day they fished for brown trout and grayling and gathered around the campfire in the evening to chat and trade fishing stories. I was immediately impressed by the elegant nature of fly fishing and the camaraderie around the campfire. I decided, then and there, to become a fly fisher! |
| I enthusiastically began to absorb fly-fishing information in written, picture, and film form. I visited fly fishing shows and meetings, watched and listened to masters of fly fishing, took a fly fishing and fly tying course, and learned continuously more. "Normal" fishing gear was either given away or banned to the cellar. I was now (exclusively) a fly fisher! I wanted to learn as many facets of fly fishing as possible. I fished for coarse and predatory fish on my home river; for trout, grayling, and char in lakes and rivers within and outside of Germany; for salmon in Norway; and sea-run browns and other salt-water fish on the coasts. Flies tied by me are always on the end of my tippet. I became particularly enthusiastic about the challenging fishing for sea-run browns on the shores of the Baltic Sea. It remains impressive for me that a sea-run brown sees and attacks my small fly on the broad, open salt-water. Today I fish the coasts almost exclusively with my own shrimp imitations whose realistic appearance and lively action in the water are most successful. I have been able to pass on my knowledge of fly fishing and fly tying to interested anglers in courses, club lessons, demonstrations, and as a lecturer at Bochum's adult education program. It is a great honor for me to take part in the EWF. I particularly wish to thank Gerd-Peter Wieditz for his recommendation that I participate for the first time in this wonderful show and be able to present my shrimp imitations to a wider public.
