Hans Aigner

Hans Aigner was born in 1947 in Steyrermühl, Austria, which is situated next to the Traun River. When he was only 11 years old, Hans was already working as a fishing guide on the Gmundner Traun. Hans Gebetsroither took him under his wing and taught him much about casting, fishing, fly tying and the construction of fly fishing rods. In 1977, Gebetsroither suggested that Hans take over the Erste Gebetsroither Fliegenfischerschule (the Gebetsroither School of Fly Fishing) from him, and so Hans came about running the school for the next 30 years. In 1989, Hans co-founded the Freunde der Gmundner Traun, a local fly fishing club in Austria. Within this role, he was responsible for managing the Ischler and Ebeseer Traun Rivers for the next nine years. Together with the late Walter Brunner and Sepp Prager, Hans became a fly fishing coach for the ÖFG (Austrian Fishing Association) in 1984. One of his big dreams came true when the local club was able to lease parts of the Gmundner Traun in 2006. He was one of the key players in arranging this deal with the ÖFG and the jurisdictions of Steyer-Grünburg and Steyer-Pichlern (where Hans is also responsible for river management). For more than 21 years, Hans and some of his partners leased sections of the Ager River including all neighboring creeks. It is here where they experimented with Boxen and Brüttlingen. At home, Hans enjoys fishing most in the Traun, Steyer and Anger Rivers. When time and money allows, he also fishes in Norway, Alaska, Russia and Canada. It was in Belize’s Los Roques where he first encountered the species, bonefish and tapon. Hans retired in 2007 and looks forward to many more fly fishing years to come. |
